Low-Fat & Low-Calorie Diet Menu

Establishing a diet low in fat and calories, if approached safely, can be effective in achieving overall health and might lead to a longer life. A sensible low-calorie diet is also often low in fat, as fatty foods tend to be caloric. If you plan to put yourself on a low-calorie or low-fat diet, it's advisable to talk to a nutritionist or a physician who can determine how many calories you require given your current weight and activity level. In the meantime, you should understand the basics.

Though you may not eat meat, basing meals upon lean protein minimizes the number of calories needed to sustain you for longer periods of time. Solid examples of lean protein, which are low in fat and in calories, include chicken breast (baked or broiled), fish, turkey or--for the vegetarian--chickpeas or soybeans. Fresh lemon juice and olive oil are healthy options for flavoring and preparing these types of protein-based products.

Building fresh fruits and vegetables into your low-calorie, low-fat diet plan maximizes your intake of necessary vitamins and minerals. Uncooked or even lightly cooked fruits and vegetables are almost always low in fat and calories. They are also easy to digest, as your body takes less energy to metabolize these foods. One exception to natural low-fat foods is avocado, which contains a higher level of fat than other fruits and vegetables. Eat fresh avocado sparingly. Leafy greens like spinach and broccoli can--and should--be eaten in generous amounts.

Whole-grain foods like wheat breads, pastas and natural cereals are often low in fat and high in fiber, which--like lean protein--allows you to feel satisfied for longer periods of time, decreasing your overall calorie intake. Consider the importance of breakfast, as eating healthy meals early in the day helps you burn calories longer. Morning meals, for example, can involve a high-protein, high-fiber oatmeal mixed with fresh fruit. Select cereals that contain wheat-flour bases and that list (on their boxes) at least 7 grams each of protein and fiber.

To train yourself into a lifestyle of low-fat and low-calorie eating, learn to read the ingredients on labels of food products. Aim to keep your daily sodium levels below 2,000 mg. Look for foods that have next to no saturated fat, and avoid foods that are boxed or highly processed. Buy cereals that list natural products like soy or whole-wheat flour well before sugar. Foods that are high in sugar and sodium are typically also higher in fat or calories, or both.

Low-Fat Whole Foods Plant-Based Diet

Low-Fat Whole Foods Plant-Based Diet

A low-fat, whole foods plant-based diet, also known as a low-fat whole foods vegan diet, has been popularized by Dr. John McDougall, author of The McDougall Program, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of Eat to Live. On both plans, the dieter adopts a totally vegan diet and concentrates on eating naturally low-fat whole foods. The diets center around eating fruits, legumes, whole grains and vegetables. McDougall and Fuhrman advocate this type of diet for weight loss and to obtain maximum health.

A vegan diet excludes all foods made of or by animals. All meats including poultry, fish and seafood, all dairy products, eggs and animal byproducts such as lard and gelatin are abstained from on a vegan diet. The diet consists of plant-based foods such as grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, vegetarian meat substitutes, soy products such as tofu and soy milk, other dairy substitutes and oils.

Whole foods are foods containing all of their nutrients naturally provided by Mother Nature. Whole foods have not been processed or refined, and they do not contain synthetic, artificial or lab-created ingredients. Nothing has been added to them, either, including fiber or protein. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains such as brown rice or oatmeal, nuts and legumes are examples of whole foods.

Processed foods, conversely, are foods that do not look as though they could be found in nature "as is." Prepackaged foods such as frozen dinners and canned soups, all purpose flour, refined sugar, anything with trans fats or high fructose corn syrup, junk food, artificial sweeteners, sodas, "diet" foods like Weight Watchers bars and SnackWell's cookies and store-bought juices are examples of processed foods.

The McDougall program completely eliminates fats. Salt is also severely restricted, with only small amounts allowed to make food more palatable. On the plan, the dieter can eat unlimited whole grains such as oats, barley, brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat couscous, vegetables and legumes. However, all nuts and seeds are banned, and fruit is limited to two servings per day. For maximum weight loss, Dr. McDougall also recommends reducing the consumption of soy products.

The Eat to Live program eliminates fats and all foods containing flours until the individual reaches an ideal weight. On the plan, the dieter eats an unlimited amount of non-starchy vegetables with slight restrictions on the consumption of fruits, grains and legumes. On the diet, it is recommended that 1 pound of salad and other raw vegetables be eaten every day with 1 pound of cooked non-starchy vegetables, four servings of fruit, 1 cup of starchy vegetables and whole grains, 1 cup of legumes, 1 ounce of nuts and 1 tablespoon of flax seeds. Once an ideal weight is reached, unprocessed fats and foods with whole wheat flours may be added back into the diet but must be consumed sparingly.

Studies suggest that a low-fat vegan diet based on whole foods can aid in weight loss, help with diabetes, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of developing heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer. For example, a study by Stanford University suggests that a low-fat vegan diet has twice the cholesterol-lowering power of omnivorous low-fat diet. Similarly, a study done at George Washington University revealed that eating a low-fat vegan diet helps individuals better manage type 2 diabetes. A study performed at University of Massachusetts Medical School revealed that a low-fat vegan diet slows cancer growth, and similar results were discussed by T. Colin Campbell in The China Study.

Dr. Kerrie Saunders also published the "Vegan Diet As Chronic Disease Prevention: Evidence Supporting the New Four Food Groups," which explores numerous scientific studies and evidence that suggests eating meat and dairy causes disease and, conversely, observing a vegan diet will prevent and cure diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many others. Most recently, research done by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn suggested that a fat-free vegan diet can prevent and reverse heart disease.

A balanced vegan diet will provide the body with all of its nutritional needs. However, a poorly planned diet may result in deficiencies of vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids and iodine. Therefore, it is important that any individual on a vegan diet eat a wide variety of fruits, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds and vegetables to ensure adequate nutrition.

How to Plan a Low-Fat Diet Week

a How to Plan a Low-Fat Diet WeekA week of low-fat dieting can be filled with new recipes, spices, cultures, and cooking techniques...lifestyle additions that can be adapted long after the week is over. Eating a low-fat diet can still mean eating well: plan for and prepare foods that don't allow for guilt, are easy enough to be practical, and delicious enough to be eaten over and over again. 1 Choose your recipes ahead of time. To prevent impulsive binges, choose your recipes ahead of time and shop for the needed ingredients. When planning meals, determine a maximum amount of fat for each day and plan accordingly. Use a cookbook that lists nutritional facts in the book itself so you can monitor your intake. Pay attention to the serving sizes and then shop accordingly. Choose recipes that can be prepared with very little fat. Low fat ingredients are a healthy start, but don't overturn your efforts by adding fat during cooking. Bake, broil, or saute instead of frying.Try spreading out your fat throughout the day, Going fat-free can be disastrous, since fat is satisfying and helps to fill up any dieter. Instead, shoot for low-fat intake: the Mayo Clinic suggests no less than 20% of total intake. 20% means 24g of fat for those eating 1,100 calories, 27g if eating 1,200 calories/day, 31g if eating 1,400 calories/day, and 36g if eating 1, 600 calories/day. Since losing weight depends on cutting your calories as well as your fat, try not to go above 1,600 calories, so allow 36g of fat to be your maximum.2 Stock your refrigerator with basics. Keep ingredients that act as "flavor blankets"--things that can be easily added to for a quick meal. Whole-wheat tortilla wraps, salad mix, fruits, low-fat yogurt (greek yogurt has plenty of protein as an added plus), Reduced fat cheeses (stick to the serving size on these to make sure you are still eating "low fat"), applesauce (use while baking: replace half the fat used with applesauce). Make sure to have "free foods" on hand--foods with very little fat and very few calories. Use as a side anytime you need more "bulk" with your meal. Broccoli, cucumbers, cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, rhubarb are all very low in calories. Also, try keeping carbonated water or seltzer on hand--the volume will fill you up without adding calories.3 Stock your pantry. Since being tired and hungry can be overwealming enough at the end of the day, don't get stuck without the right ingredients for the dish you are planning: if a recipe falls through or time is too short to prepare one, you will still have standby ingredients to work with. Fat is often an ingredient by itself, since it adds an impressive mouthful and a distinct richness of flavor. Replace high-fat butter with a reduced-fat vegetable oil spread. Replace fat with flavor: staples are the things that will add flavor to your dishes without adding too many additional calories or too much added fat. Stock salt and pepper, balsamic vinegar, and herbs & spices. Keep cinnamon for desserts and coffees, garlic powder for any savory dishes, oregano and basil for Italian dishes, sage, thyme, and tarragon for seafood and meat, and chili powder and hot sauce if you like spicy things.4 Know how to read the labels. The American Dietetic Association provides some guidance for deciphering the words written on so many products: "low-fat" means 3 grams of fat or less per serving, "fat-free" means less than 1/2 gram of fat per serving, "low calorie" means less than 40 calories per serving and "calorie free" means less than 5 calories per serving.5 Know what to avoid. For a week of low-fat dieting, some ingredients will act to sabotage your efforts. Peanut butter, nuts, butter, and oils have a high-fat content and can add up quickly: 2 tablespoons of peanut butter has 11g of fat, for instance. Use replacements: try reduced-fat vegetable spreads instead of butter, 1 tablespoon of natural reduced-fat peanut butter, and vegetable cooking spray on pans for sauting instead of pourable oil. Red meat is often rich in fat, so buy carefully: buy lean and extra-lean varieties. If chicken is on your menu, look for breasts without skin for the lowest-fat chicken alternative. Beans and legumes have no fat to begin with, a guarantee when you are using them that they will fit into your diet.howtolose10poundshq.com/diet-plan-to-lose-10-pounds Diet Plan To Lose 10 Pounds.
