Disadvantages of Living in a City

City life, like rural life, has its share of advantages and disadvantages. People's lifestyle choices dictate where they choose to live. People who want a modern life style, with a focus on luxury, convenience and accessibility, will choose city life. Advanced technological appliances to better job opportunities, better wages and extensive product ranges are some of the attractions of city life. However, the disadvantages include high cost of living, poor life-work balance, noise pollution and stress.

Increased movement of people from rural to urban areas puts a strain on the city's infrastructure. As more people join the commuter rush each day, roads and freeways become crowded. New construction adds to the chaos as it struggles to keep up with demand. Ambulances and emergency vehicles sometimes find it hard to navigate the bumper-to-bumper traffic during rush hours. This can put seriously ill or injured people's lives at risk. Schools have problems accommodating increasing student numbers.

In 2007 the United Nations estimated the total world population at 6.6 billion and predicted a rise of over 37 percent by 2050. More than half of the 6.6 billion were living in urban areas. Roughly 80 percent of the U.S. population, for example, lives in urban areas. As population density in cities increases, it leads to overcrowding. This happens because the demand for housing is more than the supply of housing.

People who live in cities are constantly being exposed to an unhealthy lifestyle that leads to health problems. The free availability of junk food and hectic pace of life do not allow much room for a healthy diet. People are constantly in a rush in the city, and they end up eating on the run, eating in cars while driving, eating between meetings or not at all. As air and water pollution increases, it may bring disease. Stressful jobs and commuting and trying to juggle too many things lead to heart problems and high blood pressure.

Crime figures for the city are always higher than that of rural areas. People who live in the city are exposed to a violent environment on the streets and from watching the news on television. Some city dwellers don't bother to help a person who is being attacked -- they prefer to mind their own business. Cities spawn gangs that cause much of the violence; rape, robbery, assault and murder have become common everyday occurrences in some cities.

Low-Fat Whole Foods Plant-Based Diet

A low-fat, whole foods plant-based diet, also known as a low-fat whole foods vegan diet, has been popularized by Dr. John McDougall, author of The McDougall Program, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of Eat to Live. On both plans, the dieter adopts a totally vegan diet and concentrates on eating naturally low-fat whole foods. The diets center around eating fruits, legumes, whole grains and vegetables. McDougall and Fuhrman advocate this type of diet for weight loss and to obtain maximum health.

A vegan diet excludes all foods made of or by animals. All meats including poultry, fish and seafood, all dairy products, eggs and animal byproducts such as lard and gelatin are abstained from on a vegan diet. The diet consists of plant-based foods such as grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, vegetarian meat substitutes, soy products such as tofu and soy milk, other dairy substitutes and oils.

Whole foods are foods containing all of their nutrients naturally provided by Mother Nature. Whole foods have not been processed or refined, and they do not contain synthetic, artificial or lab-created ingredients. Nothing has been added to them, either, including fiber or protein. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains such as brown rice or oatmeal, nuts and legumes are examples of whole foods.

Processed foods, conversely, are foods that do not look as though they could be found in nature "as is." Prepackaged foods such as frozen dinners and canned soups, all purpose flour, refined sugar, anything with trans fats or high fructose corn syrup, junk food, artificial sweeteners, sodas, "diet" foods like Weight Watchers bars and SnackWell's cookies and store-bought juices are examples of processed foods.

The McDougall program completely eliminates fats. Salt is also severely restricted, with only small amounts allowed to make food more palatable. On the plan, the dieter can eat unlimited whole grains such as oats, barley, brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat couscous, vegetables and legumes. However, all nuts and seeds are banned, and fruit is limited to two servings per day. For maximum weight loss, Dr. McDougall also recommends reducing the consumption of soy products.

The Eat to Live program eliminates fats and all foods containing flours until the individual reaches an ideal weight. On the plan, the dieter eats an unlimited amount of non-starchy vegetables with slight restrictions on the consumption of fruits, grains and legumes. On the diet, it is recommended that 1 pound of salad and other raw vegetables be eaten every day with 1 pound of cooked non-starchy vegetables, four servings of fruit, 1 cup of starchy vegetables and whole grains, 1 cup of legumes, 1 ounce of nuts and 1 tablespoon of flax seeds. Once an ideal weight is reached, unprocessed fats and foods with whole wheat flours may be added back into the diet but must be consumed sparingly.

Studies suggest that a low-fat vegan diet based on whole foods can aid in weight loss, help with diabetes, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of developing heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer. For example, a study by Stanford University suggests that a low-fat vegan diet has twice the cholesterol-lowering power of omnivorous low-fat diet. Similarly, a study done at George Washington University revealed that eating a low-fat vegan diet helps individuals better manage type 2 diabetes. A study performed at University of Massachusetts Medical School revealed that a low-fat vegan diet slows cancer growth, and similar results were discussed by T. Colin Campbell in The China Study.

Dr. Kerrie Saunders also published the "Vegan Diet As Chronic Disease Prevention: Evidence Supporting the New Four Food Groups," which explores numerous scientific studies and evidence that suggests eating meat and dairy causes disease and, conversely, observing a vegan diet will prevent and cure diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many others. Most recently, research done by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn suggested that a fat-free vegan diet can prevent and reverse heart disease.

A balanced vegan diet will provide the body with all of its nutritional needs. However, a poorly planned diet may result in deficiencies of vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids and iodine. Therefore, it is important that any individual on a vegan diet eat a wide variety of fruits, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds and vegetables to ensure adequate nutrition.

Traditionally used for natural healing and seasoning, this powerful powder could help to inhibit the growth of fat cells. Used for over 6,000 years as traditional medicine in India and Ancient Egypt, turmeric, a member of the ginger family, is used to flavor curries and is used as yellow food coloring. According to the Advanced Health and Life Extension, numerous modern trials have only validated turmeric's use as a supplement for a wide variety of ailments. For example, turmeric contains the polyphenol curcumin, and a recent study has shown curcumin's potential for weight loss in mice.

In a study by the Agricultural Research Service at Tufts University in Boston, researchers divided a group of 18 mice into three groups. A control group was fed a typical diet, while the other two were both fed high-fat diets. One group eating the high-fat diet also received a relatively small amount of curcumin. At the end of the study, researchers Mohsen Meydani and Jean Mayer found that the high-fat group fed the curcumin weighed less than the group that didn't receive the supplement, though both groups ate the same diet. In addition, the group fed curcumin had lower levels of blood cholesterol and liver fat.

The researchers at Tufts University say that curcumin stalls the spread of fat by inhibiting new blood vessel growth in the fat cells themselves. The curcumin appeared to interfere with the expression of the two genes associated with the spread of these fat cells. Meydani, one of the Tufts researchers and a nutritionist, says he can't predict whether the results would be the same in humans. As of this time, he says no similar studies have been done on humans.

According to the Advanced Health and Life Extension, turmeric rarely has side effects. If anything, they say, excessive amounts could cause mild stomach distress. However, those with liver disease, those who drink heavily or those who are taking heptoxic medication should be under the care of a physician while taking turmeric supplements, as large amounts may be toxic to the liver.
Human trials have found no negative side effects of 800 to 2,500 milligrams of turmeric per day. Turmeric can be found in capsule form.

In addition to possible weight loss, turmeric offers its users other health benefits, too. The Advanced Health and Life Extension says researchers have demonstrated that curcumin inhibited the growth of cancer cells and promoted cell death in three different melanoma cancer lines. Curcumin works by suppressing the protein in the cancer cell responsible for protecting the cell from death.
Also, the Diet Blog states that turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory and a protector against Alzheimer's disease and cystic fibrosis.
