How to Follow the Thyroid Diet

The Thyroid Diet, created by Mary Shomon, is based on the idea that many people have weight problems due to undiagnosed thyroid problems. People with hypothyroidism often gain weight because of the condition. By following the Thyroid Diet, you can increase your metabolism and begin dropping excess weight.

1

Choose the Thyroid Diet that is right for you. The Free-Form Plan, Carb-Sensitive Plan and Calorie-Sensitive Plan are the 3 plans outlined in The Thyroid Diet book.

2

Eat 6 small meals each day. Thyroid sufferers should not eat 3 heavy meals a day. Meals should be stretched throughout the day and consist of six mini-meals.

3

Control your portion sizes. An important part of the Thyroid Diet is to know how to measure serving sizes. You have to learn how to eyeball food and tell if it is the approved amount.

4

Include carbohydrates in your diet. One of the best parts of the Thyroid Diet is that followers are permitted to have complex carbohydrates in their meals. Carbohydrates add to a balanced diet.

5

Drink a lot of water. While following the Thyroid Diet, it is recommended that you drink at leas 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.

The Best Diet to Help Thyroid Patients Lose Weight

A decrease in thyroid function means a slowed metabolism. Less energy gets used up by the body and more of it becomes stored as fat. This is why an under-active thyroid often leads to weight gain, according to the Thyroid Foundation of Canada. However, with the right kinds of foods being incorporated into the diet, as well as some supplements and the avoidance of other counter-productive foods, weight loss is still quite possible for those with thyroid disease.

Following a healthy, well-balanced diet is a great starting point for thyroid patients who choose to lose weight. However, according to the Anne Collins Weight Management Program, there are certain foods that improve thyroid function and restore metabolism. Among these foods are carrots, spinach, olive oil, avocados, asparagus, whole-grain cereals, bananas and oily fish. When planning meals, be sure to regularly include these foods.
Avoiding foods that interfere with iodine uptake--such as cabbage, broccoli, sweet potatoes, lima beans and soy products--will also help thyroid patients lose weight.

Certain nutritional supplements have shown positive results on people with thyroid disorders, according to Anne Collins. Deficiencies in selenium, which is found in foods such as tomatoes, Brazil nuts, tuna and onions, can promote hypothyroidism. Taking selenium supplements or eating selenium-rich foods can help keep the body burning calories and prevent weight gain.
Zinc supplements are also recommended, as research has shown that this nutrient improves thyroid function, according to Anne Collins.

In addition to the high-calorie content of sodas, these drinks should be avoided because of high levels of caffeine. Caffeine and other stimulants are not recommended for thyroid patients because stimulants may affect thyroid function. Nicotine, which is found in cigarettes, is also on the list of things to avoid for the same reason. According to Thyroid-info.com, stimulants may actually worsen symptoms of thyroid disease and can make patients with normal or under-active thyroids appear to have hyperthyroidism, which could lead to improper treatment.

A daily half hour to 45-minute workout will help burn calories and speed up metabolism in people with no health problems, and it works the same for those with thyroid disease. For those currently taking part in an exercise regimen, increase your workout by 10 minutes. Regular exercise also dramatically reduces stress. Stress is thought to be a contributing factor for people who develop hypothyroidism, according to Anne Collins.

Thyroid & Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Thyroid & Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Two of the most common disorders that involve hormonal imbalance in women are Polycistic Ovary Syndrome and hypothyroidism. These two disorders have very similar symptoms and can usually only be distinguished through blood tests. Many women suffer from both at the same time. Both disorders affect many aspects of the woman's life and need to be treated properly.

The symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) begin with irregular periods. Usually periods become heavier and abnormal. They may also become more spread out, instead of being every 28-30 days. Beyond irregular periods, PCOS symptoms include depression, mood swings, hair loss, weight gain and acne. These symptoms are the result of higher than normal levels of androgen hormones in the body. Untreated, these symptoms can cause infertility issues.

The symptoms of hypothyroidism are similar to those of PCOS. Hypothyroidism in women usually results in irregular and heavy periods, depression, mood swings, weight gain and hair loss. In addition, hypothyroidism causes exhaustion, joint pain and muscle weakness. Hypothyroidism left unchecked can get out of control, causing a host of other diseases in the body.

When women go to the doctor complaining of unexplainable weight gain, abnormal periods and hair loss, the doctor will generally test for both PCOS and hypothyroidism. These are the two most common diseases with these symptoms that affect women of child-bearing age. A simple blood test can show which hormone levels are too high. Abnormal levels of the thyroid hormones (TSH, T3 and T4) indicate a thyroid problem while abnormal androgen levels indicate PCOS. Doctors are now discovering that hypothyroidism and PCOS go hand in hand and are researching the possibility that hypothyroidism can cause PCOS.

A woman who has both PCOS and hypothyroidism will deal with all the frustrations of infertility while also dealing with the aches and pains of hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can cause additional fertility issues as well. Women with untreated hypothyroidism are more likely to have preterm labor, still births or even miscarriages. This means that someone with PCOS and hypothyroidism who does get pregnant has a lower chance of delivering a healthy, full-term baby.

Since many doctors now believe that PCOS is made worse and possibly caused by thyroid disorders, keeping the thyroid in check is the best treatment. An endocrinologist can help a woman get her hormone levels back to normal through hormone supplements that are safe to use even while pregnant. Once her thyroid issues are in check, the woman can re-evaluate her PCOS symptoms and infertility issues and make educated decisions on fertility treatments and hormone therapy for PCOS symptoms.
