Protein Diet for Weight Lifters

a Protein Diet for Weight LiftersLarge muscles require immense effort in both the gym and the kitchen. Most recreational weight lifters do not fully understand the dedication and discipline it takes to drastically improve their body composition. Adequate protein intake is a key component necessary for muscle repair and growth--without protein to fuel the body, the trainee is just endlessly breaking down old muscle tissue while never making progress. To avoid this, a good nutrition plan is needed--Massive Eating. Massive Eating is a nutritional strategy invented by Dr. John Berardi, Ph.D., for both recreational weightlifters and bodybuilders. Dr. Berardi is a nutritionist and biochemist from Canada who works with a wide range of clients, ranging from professional athletes to recreational lifters. The idea behind Massive Eating is simple--to gain muscle mass, the body must exist in positive energy balance (which means ingesting more calories than it expends). However, when gaining weight, some fat gain is inevitable, just as while losing weight some muscle loss is inevitable. To strike the right balance between muscle and fat gain or loss, Massive Eating makes the following recommendation: Never consume high levels of carbs and high levels of fat in the same meal. Only consume either protein and carb meals or protein and fat meals. This will minimize the chance of your body storing the ingesting calories as fat.To follow the Massive Eating plan, you must: Aim for at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day, with 1.5 grams being optimal. Consume at least six meals a day, divided equally between protein and fat and protein and carb meals. Limit carbs to natural carb sources wherever possible--fruits, veggies, oats, sweet potatoes and some whole grains. Fats should be split between animal fats, natural fats (as from avocados or coconuts), and oils (fish, flax, olive, coconut and macadamia nut).Although Massive Eating is intended to be a protein-based weight-gain diet, the basic idea can also be used to drop body fat while retaining muscle. Regardless of whether your goal is weight gain or loss, assess progress every two weeks by using both the scale and the mirror. If you are gaining or losing at a satisfactory rate (around one to two pounds a week), keep calories constant. If you are not gaining or losing at this rate, increase or decrease daily calories by 200 per day, reassessing again after another two weeks.
